Subject: Mill Spindle with Encoder
Can I use my the encoder in my spindle motor to provide an actual RPM to display on the Kmotioncnc GUI?

On the GUI to the right of the big red "S" are 2 number readouts, the top shows the commanded speed and currently the bottom one just shows "0" when my machine is running. Can this lower one display an actual speed calculated from the encoder pulse tail?

Current configuration of the spindle
-Using the "DAC" option under the "S" menu in "Tool Setup Screen".
-Scaled analog signal form KANALOG for frequency
-2 digital outputs for CW and CCW
- 500 count per revolution quadrature encoder connected to differential encoder channel #3

At this time I am not needing this to be closed loop, but if it didn't take much work I would not be opposed to making the spindle closed loop.

Hi Dan,

Yes you can display the actual RPM since you have an encoder.

You must choose a KFLOP Axis Channel to read encoder input channel #3.  Then verify the Position for that KFLOP Axis channel's Position counts on the KMotion Axis Screen when the spindle moves.  Then configure the Spindle as shown here:
http://dynomotion.com/Help/KMotionCNC/ToolSetupScreenTP.htm#Threading/Spindle_Settings

Closed loop spindle control is also possible.  In this case configure the KFLOP Axis channel as a DAC Servo and tune it such that you can Jog at any speed.  Then configure the KMotionCNC S command to use the Jog programs.  See:
